Customer Review
This is my first and only bread machine I have used. It is a refurbished Cusinart given to me for Christmas. Wasn't my first choice but I love it; once I stopped using the recipes it comes with; they are kind of bland and a lot of loaves just deflated or were hard as bricks. I admit that it may be due to a learning curve... using the correct flours, water temperatures, order of ingredients, etc. I have been using it pretty much everyday since Christmas 2009 and sometimes twice a day; especially in the beginning just in case we had to send it back which we haven't had to. I use recipes out of the The Bread Lover's Bread Machine Cookbook which is a great book I borrowed from the library.
I have noticed that if I leave the bread in there through the warming cycle at the end of the cycle it can make the crust dryer or more dark than I wanted it. If I know I am not going to be there to take it out I put it on the light crust setting and it turns out well.
Still using it and loving it.
PS I have been able to stop a cycle partly through it by pressing and holding the Stop/Pause button. i did that for making a starter for shepards bread.
3/14/10 update
So 4 days after my 90 day warranty (for refurbished machines) was up the machine stopped working. The paddle wouldn't turn. I called customer service; they said turn it off and unplug it for an hour and call them back if it doesn't work. I did even though I knew it wouldn't work because it sounded like there was loose change in the machine when I moved it. So I called back and they said there was nothing they could do past warranty except offer me a new machine at "lower" prices. I declined... they also said that if it was under warranty they would just take it and exchange it they don't fix anything.
Anyway... my father in law took it, opened up the bottom of it (you need a special tool of some sort) and said a screw was loose and a belt slipped off. He fixed it easy enough and i am back making bread. Machine works great again. I am hopeful this review helps someone else in a similar situation. We had nothing to lose by opening the machine up and trying to fix it... if we couldn't fix it it would have ended up in the trash anyway so I'm glad we did. What a waste if it ended up in the trash...
CUISINART CBK-200 BREAD MAKER - Gerald H. Vanboxtel - IOLA, WI United States
I was pretty much satisfied with the ordering process, the price and the quality of the Cuisinart cbk-200 automatic bread machine. If I have any disatisfaction it would be that I can't get the crust to come out light even selecting the lite setting.
Breaks down quickly...low carb recipes do not work well & expensive - Bob Santarossa -
Broke down after only 5 months of use (3 recipes per week, max).
Under/over bakes most of the recipes (rock hard near black crust or light crust with an under baked core - basically Darwin's random selection at work). Lemon Poppy Seed Bread/Panettone etc. recipes come out under baked at the core and are not mixed properly; the Low Carb breads are over baked, they need more yeast to make them rise and the ingredients are exotic to say the least (e.g., try easily/inexpensively finding: fine ground Almond Flour, Barley Flour, Oat Flour etc.). Have tried many tricks of the trade such as Lecithin, Non-Diastatic Malt to improve texture, yeast rise etc. and to no avail.
Alternatively and for fun, try their 2 pound "Apple Pie" Bread recipe: watch it rise quickly to the view window and stick to it, leaving the top inch or so unbaked and a sticky mess trying to pry it from the view window after the bake cycle! Or try their Banana Walnut Loaf recipe and observe the black brick that emerges with an unbaked core (soggy) along with unmixed flour in all 4 corners - makes for a nice "thud" as it hits the garbage can.
On top of all this, the single mix/kneading paddle often "flings" ingredients to the top of the pan requiring that you monitor the machine with a spatula constantly during the mixing phase.
All in all, I would NEVER buy this machine again or accept it as a gift. I broke down and bought the more expensive Zojirushi BBCC-X20 - which is what I should have bought in the first place (tried to save a few bucks, bad idea in hindsight - you get what you pay for...do not make my mistake). I am not a novice and bake/cook a lot (Mom a Cordon Bleu trained chef).
